About the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)

The Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is the Mat-Su Valley’s long-range blueprint for building a safe, connected, and resilient transportation future. Developed by Mat-Su Valley Planning for Transportation (MVP), the MTP outlines the region’s transportation goals through the year 2050 and identifies the projects and strategies needed to achieve them.

As the region’s first federally required long-range transportation plan, the MTP will guide investments across all modes of travel—roads, transit, freight, walking, and biking—while supporting economic development, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.

     Why It Matters

The Mat-Su Borough is one of Alaska’s fastest-growing regions. With increasing population and development, the need for a coordinated, forward-looking transportation strategy is more urgent than ever. The MTP ensures that future infrastructure investments reflect community values, improve safety and mobility, and meet both state and federal requirements.

     Who’s Involved

The MTP is led by MVP, the region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), in collaboration with local governments, tribal partners, state and federal agencies, and the public. The planning process is supported by RESPEC and guided by the MVP Policy Board and Technical Committee.

     What to Expect

The MTP will be developed through a transparent and inclusive process that includes:

  • Goal setting (Spring–Summer 2025)

  • Alternatives and scenario development (Fall 2025)

  • Draft plan and public review (Summer 2026)

  • Final plan adoption (Fall 2026)

Stay tuned for public engagement opportunities—your voice will help shape the future of transportation in the Mat-Su Valley.
