About the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)

  • The Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is the Mat-Su Valley’s long-range strategy for a safe, connected, and resilient transportation future.

  • It is developed by Mat-Su Valley Planning for Transportation (MVP).

  • This is the region’s first federally required long-range transportation plan.

  • The MTP guides strategic investments across all modes of travel: roads, transit, freight, walking, and biking.

  • It supports economic development, environmental sustainability, quality of life, and community well-being.

     Why It Matters

The Mat-Su is Alaska's fastest-growing region, with a population increasing 20% since 2010. This growth creates both opportunities and challenges. The MTP ensures our transportation investments reflect community priorities, improve safety and mobility, and meet federal requirements for continued funding.

     Who’s Involved

The MTP is led by MVP, the region's Metropolitan Planning Organization, working with local governments, tribal partners, state and federal agencies, and—most importantly—the public.  Your input shapes these decisions. The process is guided by RESPEC consultants and approved by the MVP Policy Board and Technical Committee.

     What to Expect

The MTP will be developed through a transparent and inclusive process that includes:

  • Goal setting (Spring–Summer 2025)

  • Exploring transportation options (Fall 2025)

  • Draft plan and public review (Summer 2026)

  • Final plan adoption (Fall 2026)

Stay tuned for public engagement opportunities—your voice will help shape the future of transportation in the Mat-Su Valley.
